i have enjoyed watching your youtube videos. I had surgery on sunday i stepped on dog shit stepping off a curb and my feet slid under me causing me to land on both my knees and tearing both my patella tendons in both legs. I think the hardest thing for me to do is stay positive because this all happen the day before i was to start a new job.

kyle

Hey, just going through comments now believe it or not. That sucks man. How is it now? YOu are 2.5 months into the journey, you should be ready to turn the corner now!

Sean

I would first like to say that your videos are inspiring and give me hope. I tore my patellar tendon playing football at my university and I am now two weeks post op. I tore the tendon in the middle, which is not what I was hoping, but watching your videos made me question my doctors “passive” approach. I am aware he is my surgeon and knows more than me, but I just got the news I cannot start rehab for another four weeks! I was hoping I could at least try and start bending my knee so that the scar tissue wont be as bad, but doesn’t look like the doc wants me too. Do you think I should start bending it a little? I can walk with out crutches now, but obviously I am in this god forsaken brace.

I have many goals, but the number one goal for me is to be able to pass my run test for the police academy January 8th of this coming year. A 1.5 mile run under 13 minutes. That would have been easy for me prior to this speed bump. Since you went through this and much more, my question to you is do you think this is a reasonable goal, and will my knee be able to handle the future runs during the academy this coming summer, granted I pass the one this January. I am the kind of person that doesn’t take no for an answer and would appreciate any information you could give me.

kyle

Hi Sean, sorry to hear that. First off, yes you will be ready to pass that test. I had to do something like that on a whim at a seminar i went to in about the same time frame. The biggest problem was the calf cramping, so keep some tums handy. It will take longer to get the explosiveness back. Yes, you should start bending sooner than that, if you read your injury report, I am sure that it is going to say that they had it bent at 90 degrees on the operating table. You have the right mindset and you will be fine. Let me know how i can help and keep me posted!

Sean

Kyle thanks for the response. I will be starting rehab this week coming up after I meet with the doc. As you know this is an emotional roller coaster with it’s ups and downs. I find myself extremely frustrated at times with this injury and often go and hit the heavy bag (almost as good as Ali, minus the whole float like a butterfly thing) to alleviate anger. If you do not mind me asking what degree of rom were you at the first time you bent your knee and also how long did it take you to get to 90 degrees.

On a side note I read your suspension of disbelief and it is quite interesting. I recently just had a lecture in my biopsych class about neural pathways and connectomes. If you get a minute check out Sebastian Seung “I am my connectome” on TED.com.

Hi Kyle,

First of all I have a big respect for you and what you are and have been doing to help recover athletes and yourself.

I am a belgian man playing semi-pro rugby in New Zealand. I had a good future in front of me being selected for the extended squad for the Heartland XV which is the lowest level of national representative team within NZ. For myself is this the absolute highlight of my rugby career being the first belgian rugby player to ever get this high in rugby.
On 19/07/2014 during a semi final game in the 70th minute I did a good run with some solid meters, after I got tackled en placed the ball so my teammates could set up a nice run from that, I tried to get up but as soon as I tried that there was this immense pain in my knee and when I looked at it there just was a big dent where my patella used to be. After the ambulance took me to hospital I got surgery that same night for a patella tendon rupture where my kneecap got lodged somewhere into my quad.

Now here is my question since I am determined to come back stronger as before: After all the tests they discovered a 22mm lateral tier into my other patella tendon (explains the pains I have been feeling)
What would your recommendation be for my recovery path. I want to be on the feeld and strong with 2 good knees by April 2015
Is this possible?

Thank you for letting me share my story with you
And I am looking forward to your reply

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike, great to hear from you and congrats on your accomplishments, quite impressive! You will be able to be athletic by then but you won’t feel 100%. That took me about 18+ months, although i played in a basketball league 6 months after surgery, it was much too soon tho. I would get that leg moving asap, don’t let the scar tissue build up. Were you able to get a copy of my manual? If not, let me know, I highlight a ton of stuff in there. Ill be glad to hop on Skype or something one day soon tho so you can ask all the questions you have. You will recover, its a matter of time and persistence. Stay strong mentally-Kyle

Hi Kyle,
Rehab s going ok… I have got 60 degrees movement but not much strenght in extending yet. Lost 14kg already so have got a lot of work to do 🙂 I would love to obtain a copy of your manual. Skype is definatly an option as I do have a couple of questions for my personal future within rugby….
Thanks for that,

Mike

Hi Mike, let me know how its going and if you want to schedule the Skype or call for this upcoming week, thurs or friday. Hope you are well-Kyle

Michael Vanbelle

Hi Kylle,

I am at 110 degrees, massive improvement. I am training daily and tried the stationary bike this morning. I might just wait with that one for a couple more days as it was a bit too early. What is the time difference in regards the skype call. I am easy with either Thursday or Friday

Cheers,

Mike
