What Can You Learn from Falling Twice in One Morning?
Not too long ago, I went outside to get in my truck for my morning workout followed by a day of highly focused work.
I had a little trouble opening the door because they had iced over, which was my first clue that it was slippery.
The thought crossed my mind that I should watch my footing before I put my bags into the back seat.
No sooner did I close the door than I stepped on one of our railroads ties that lines the driveway and I went flying. Luckily, nothing was injured and it served as a jolt to my nervous system, which was like having coffee mixed with crack.
I did my workout, meditated and went off to my first meeting. When I pulled into that parking lot, I thought, hmmm, that looks slippery. Mind you, it was still only 8AM so the sun didn’t get to do it’s thing yet.
I stepped out of the truck and wham! This time I took and even harder fall right onto the pavement. I was nervous to look at my tongue because I knew I had bitten into it pretty good.
Luckily, it was only a cut and not a severed chunk.
I gathered myself and headed into the meeting with a bloody mouth, not as bad as it could have been.
What’s the lesson here?
I knew in both instances that it looked and felt slippery and had the thought both times, ‘I hope I don’t slip’, which is a weird thought to begin with for me.
Yet, in both cases, I slipped and fell. My brain was telling me to be extra careful and I didn’t heed the advice.
Be aware of your environments, be it the actual physical environment or the people around you. Your brain is hardwired for survival, usually the signals it is sending you are spot on.
Listen to your ‘gut’.
