𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝑻𝒓𝒖𝒕𝒉 𝑨𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝑾𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝑳𝒐𝒔𝒔
This past weekend, we were down the beach to spend some time with some of our great friends.
Anyhow, when I went out for my Sunday morning run, I saw a text from a friend, asking me how to respond to someone on FB that was blabbing about pseudo-science ways to lose weight.
My response is, ‘Don’t’.
This is an aside, but a key Mind Map principle; unless someone asks you directly for your advice, then don’t offer it or if you do, offer it up by asking, ‘Do you want any input?’
That’ll save you a lot of angst in the future, but let’s get back to the point.
There are many pyramid schemed, type nutrition programs out there right now.
They smooth talk with science-y terms to make it seem like it’s a no-brainer.
To not lose you in the weeds, I am going to focus on one key concept for today: blood sugar.
Because if there is one topic that very few people understand on a deep level, it would be this.
So, when you eat, your blood sugar will rise as the nutrients hit the gut and the bloodstream.
And what has to be produced to help store and clear this blood sugar? INSULIN.
Insulin sends the signal to store those nutrients, be it in the muscle cells or the fat cells.
When you become insulin resistant, that means that you are less responsive to the effects of insulin, so your body needs to produce more. Just so you connect the dots here: you are becoming resistant to the effects of insulin.
By the way, insulin resistance/inflammation is at the root of every known disease.
Ok, so the more often we spike insulin, the worse off we are going to be from a health and mood perspective.
When insulin is raised, we cannot lose body fat. Let me repeat, when insulin is raised, we cannot lose body fat.
Back to these sneaky Shake Oil Salesman (you know who they are by nature if they have a shake to sell you and promise you that if you just drink x amount of shakes per day, you will lose weight. But they do have meal replacement bars and such too).
They tell you that you have to stabilize your blood sugar, never let it drop too far, because in their theory, you will become hungry and that will cause you to overeat. Hahahaha.
Perhaps someone should introduce them to a hormone called glucagon.
Glucagon is the opposing hormone to insulin. Just like insulin lowers blood glucose, glucagon keeps blood sugar levels elevated and stable, so they don’t drop to a dangerous level.
You are either in what I call a ‘glucagon metabolism’ or an ‘insulin metabolism’.
Glucagon has to be ‘turned on’ for fat loss to occur. When we eat, glucagon levels drop because of insulin’s production.
Again, glucagon elevation is a pre-requisite for weight loss. Guess what happens, even if you are in a ‘caloric deficit’ (never has such a lie been told regarding health that weight loss is about caloric balancing) and you are drinking the magical shakes and bars that the Shake Oil Salemen, and women, push upon you? You are spiking insulin and even worse, with foods that aren’t nutritious or satiating.
I recall from my friend’s text that the one lady had mentioned something about starvation mode and starving sailors lost at see and how your metabolism slows if you starve yourself.
Listen, starving yourself is when you are in a big caloric deficit and outside food sources are still your main source of fuel. Gee, that sounds exactly like every other North American Diet that tells you to cut calories and eat more often because it will speed your metabolism.
Don’t even let me get started on what a croc of you know what that is.
When you follow the advice of the Shake Oil Salesman or a typical North American Diet, you are taking one metabolic road and when you fast as we teach in the Panda Fasting Method, you take another metabolic road.
While using a fasting-focused lifestyle and doing the unthinkable, such as using one meal per day as your foundation, your metabolism actually goes up (by 5-14%) and your hunger hormones such as ghrelin continue to go down over time. When you follow the Shake Oil Salesman, the exact opposite happens.
Your metabolism does indeed drop and your hunger hormones go up.
But don’t worry about it, they have a constant IV Drip of shakes going into your bloodstream so your blood sugar never drops.
If you want to lose weight, you need to have stable blood sugar, but not because of frequent feedings, but rather from the effect of the hormone mentioned above, glucagon.
Sometimes you have to learn the hard way, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
No one on the face of the earth (no, that is not a mistype) should be eating more than twice per day if optimal health is the main focus.
