When I first began my quest to learn all about the human body, back in 1997, as a junior in high school, I understood the concept of calories and macronutrients.
Afterall, that’s what all the bodybuilding magazines talked about.
At that point, my goal was to gain as much muscle as I could and that I did.
In fact, I put on over 30 pounds in that following summer alone.
The varsity football Coach couldn’t believe it when he saw me after the summer.
Well, as the years went by and I had goals to cut my body fat for various different endeavors, I just reversed what I did while gaining; cut calories, increase activity, do cardio on a fasted stomach, etc.
It was always a struggle.
But once I began to understand insulin and the roles that it plays on storage and growth (yes, of fat cells), everything became much easier.
There are certain foods that stimulate larger outputs of insulin and the more often you spike insulin, the fatter you will become and remain. Sorry, there are no two ways about it.
You can follow the common knowledge of staying away from forbidden foods like donuts and muffins, things that are refined, and that will help a little bit, but you will always be left feeling like you should have more to show for your results.
You can go to a nutritionist (sorry, that always makes me cringe when I hear that from someone) and there are well intentioned ones out there, but most have been bred to follow traditional dogma.
They might be able to help you with accountability. They might be able to guide you with what foods to eat, but if that were the case, why not just google it?
By and large they will play the calorie game with you: eat more meals, smaller, cut carbs and on and on.
Until you grasp that permanent weight loss is a matter of stress and insulin, you will always be left short changed.
Yes, cut out certain foods.
However, the only true way to cut down on weight and do it with simplicity is to fast and commit to fasting. Insulin will be spiked every single time you eat, no matter the food.
Cut down on insulin production and you will cut down on inflammation which will lead to a cutting down of your weight.
