Beware the Nasty Predator

About 3 weeks ago, I was finishing up with work on a Wednesday, which is usually a lighter day for me, intentionally, when Devon shot me a call.

She was calling to inform me that Mateena, our silver lab and what we consider our first child, had gotten out and killed one of the chickens.

The chickens are bound to get picked off by something back where we live.

Actually, I am surprised that none of them have gotten picked off yet, until now.

We have fox, fisher cats, coyotes, hawks, owls, raccoons and eagles back here that we see from time to time.

And our chickens are as free range as you can get.

They are out and about all day and at night, they come back to roost.

So, how ironic that the first one gets picked off by one of our pups.

I guess it’s not so surprising when you consider that labs are bred to retrieve fowl. It is in their DNA.

Remember, just because someone is near and dear to you, it doesn’t mean that they will mesh with others that are near and dear to you as well.

Don’t let your worlds collide, as Seinfeld once said.
