Smile Through Pain
A couple of weeks ago, I was training with an old friend. He was up for the challenge of doing my Friday Finisher set of long squats.
So, when the time came, I got him set up and about 90 seconds in, he was still going strong but his body language was tense. He was grunting through it. That told me that his brain was putting his attention on the pain and discomfort.
‘Smile, relax, breathe,’ I told him. And that he did. He finished smooth. You could instantly see an allowance enter his body when he did this.
When most people feel discomfort, their natural tendency is to run away or force their way through. How about you allow it and redirect your attention?
Pain is a perception. Pain signals, be they physical or emotional, arise in your brain. There’s a lot to unpack right there, but know that you control your pain.
Next time you are feeling any type of pain, smile for 20 seconds and note the difference in how you feel.
